Visit Munich – Hottest Tourist Destination in Germany

Munich is the capital of Bavaria and it is located along the River Isar. After Berlin and Hamburg, it is the third largest German city. With a population of over 1.40 million, Munich is one of the leading tourist destinations of Germany. Munich attracts people from around the world who come flocking to check its hundreds of attractions. It is also home to the world-famous beer festival, Oktoberfest.

Famous Munich Landmarks

Some of the leading landmarks of the city that make a must-see for all visitors are the Munich Residence, Marienplatz, Asam’s Church, the New Town Hall and Odeonsplatz. The Marienplatz is the public square of Munich that cannot be missed at any cost. Throughout history, it has remained the centre of social activities in the city. The square is dominated by the New City Hall, with central clock tower having a magnificent Glockenspiele.

Munich Residence is a landmark attraction of Munich and houses a museum and theatre. You can spend an entire day exploring the museum. If you are in Munich and go back home without visiting the BMW Museum, you would certainly feel having missed a big chance. The 4-cylinder shaped BMW tower has a bowl-shaped museum along with it. It would take you through BMW’s journey through technical development and the history of the company itself.

Food in Munich

Munich is a big city and boasts thousands of restaurants that offer all types of food including Italian, Asian, American, Mediterranean, French, Contemporary and German. There are hundreds of restaurants where you can enjoy your breakfast out in the open. Wirtshaus In Der Au in Lilienstr offers breakfast, lunch and dinner under the sky. However, you can also choose to sit inside if the weather is cold.

When in Munich don’t forget to taste its famous local cuisine consisting of bread soup, Semolina Knodel soup and Chanterelle soup, with main courses being Saures Lungerl and Skirt Steak. Shane’s restaurant is a good place for those who want to enjoy some time, have dinner or meet for some business. Rusticana in Grillparzerstr offers grille and steakhouse with American food. You can bring along your family to enjoy a gratifying dinner.

Traveling to Munich & Transportation

Munich has an international airport that is around 28 km from the center of the city. Located close to Freising, it is named after Franz Josef Strauss, the former Prime Minister of Bavaria.

The city is connected by trams, buses and a wider network of its suburban trains, called S-Bahn and underground trains called U-Bahn. You can locate the underground stations by the white “U” sign and a blue background, while the S-Bahn stations can be recognized by the white “S” sign on green background. Bus and tram stops can be found because of their green “H” signs on yellow background. Munich has made local transportation convenient by enabling tickets that can be used for all types of public transportation. You can buy tickets from newspaper kiosks or blue vending machines at train stations, and bus or tram stops.

Munich is the most popular German tourist destination. It is easy to understand why it is so popular. It is located along the snow-capped Alps, has broad boulevards, while having the flair of a small town and at the same time being a metropolis. Best of all, it is at the heart of the biggest beer festival in the world Oktoberfest.
